A router (not to be confused with a bridge) is a data network device
that transfers data from one LAN to another. Routers can be hardware- or
software-based, though larger applications and faster communication speeds
all but require a hardware router. Routers are used in homes and offices
with high-speed Internet access such as DSL; they serve to connect the
local LAN to the high-speed WAN operated by a service provider.
