by Jamie Scheinblum 23 Sep 1998

Jamie Scheinblum has been a Perl hacker ever since a copy of the "Camel Book" fell mysteriously into his possession. He worked as a network engineer at Fastnet, helped launch the Ravedata Project, and now heads up the Content Advisor Web robotics lab.

The Web is a moving target, constantly changing and expanding. And as a webmaster, it's your job to keep pushing your site just a little bit further to keep pace. Dynamic content, commonly delivered through CGI scripts written in Perl, is one way to make sure your site grows with the Web. But how do you take your CGI scripts to the next level and integrate them with your Web server? And can you make them run any faster?

Enter mod_perl, a terrific fusion of the Apache Web server and the Perl language. This Apache module embeds a copy of the Perl interpreter inside Apache, allowing you to not only speed up existing CGI scripts but also extend your Web server in ways previously unavailable to most webmasters.

To learn how it's done, read on. But please note that the following nitty-gritty is geared toward webmasters who already have a working understanding of how to write CGI scripts in Perl, as well as experience configuring Apache.

Before you can get things moving with mod_perl, however, you have to clear one of its biggest hurdles: the installation.
